Free & Independent Media
Free & Independent Media
At Students for Global Democracy Uganda, we recognize that free and independent media are essential pillars of a functioning democracy. Our Free & Independent Media program works to promote media freedom, develop the capacity of young journalists, and foster an environment where diverse voices can be heard.
We believe that when citizens have access to accurate, balanced, and timely information, they can make informed decisions about public affairs and hold power holders accountable. Our work in this area focuses on strengthening student journalism, promoting media literacy, and advocating for policies that protect press freedom.

Success Stories
Campus Voice
With our support, a group of journalism students at Makerere University established "Campus Voice," an independent student newspaper that covers campus issues, national politics, and student concerns. Today, it is a respected platform for student expression and has become a training ground for future journalists.
Digital Media Academy
Our Digital Media Academy has trained over 200 student journalists in digital journalism, data visualization, and multimedia storytelling. Many graduates have gone on to work for major media outlets or establish their own digital media platforms, contributing to a more diverse and innovative media landscape.
Media Policy Reform
Through our advocacy efforts, we successfully lobbied for the inclusion of press freedom protections in university media policies at three major universities in Uganda, ensuring that student journalists can report on campus issues without fear of censorship or reprisal.
Community Radio Project
We supported a group of students to establish a community radio station in a rural district, providing vital information to local communities on health, education, agriculture, and governance. The station is now a trusted source of information and a platform for community dialogue.
